When you think of a magician at a birthday party, what comes to mind? A top hat? A cape? Of course...a rabbit! Close your eyes and imagine the noise, can you hear it? Yes, children screaming, usually because they see something the magician "can't see." As soon as the magician turns around to see what the children are screaming about, "it" goes out of sight. When the magician turns back to the children, the "gremlin" returns and the screaming resumes. This continues ad nauseam, as children never tire of such "humor".
This is great, if you are a kid or if you are throwing a party for your own child.
Unfortunately, this is where most stop thinking, but what about adults? They wouldn't be interested in a magician at their birthday party? Of course, they would...remember not to stop thinking.

Our mission is to bring magic entertainment to every type of adult function imaginable, and we can do that if you "don't stop thinking."
When performing for adult Birthday parties, I always begin with my Birthday Card Trick.
This sets the tone for the party, whether it be a Strolling Gig or a Parlor Show. The guests know immediately they are in for a good time with plenty of laughter.
Lay people don't care, but for magicians, I perform this trick in two different manners. As a magician, you have obviously had your audience react loudly with..." No Way...No Way!", as they anticipate the ending but clearly feel it is impossible. This is a powerful moment.

However, as a personal challenge, I thought, how can I perform this effect, and hide that anticipatory moment. you can see that in the video.
It is not difficult to do, it is just a choice. I structure the effect, so the spectator feels they have seen the trick. In magician's terms, it's a Triumph Effect, at its climax they think the trick is done.
So, when I go to my wallet, they are remembering back to my introduction, when I told them I have brought them a Birthday Card.
When I bring out my wallet, unzip and remove the envelope, I do point out that it is entirely sealed. Next, I tear the end of the envelope and remove a card, which has a Happy birthday greeting on it with their name. You can see the only reaction is to say thank you. In this instance, the spectator said, "That's sweet."

I eventually use a gag, to encourage them to turn the card over, and they are totally surprised to see their signature on the card they selected.
Which ending is better? I don't know, probably the one with everyone yelling "No Way!", but it is good to know I have control over the situation.
Since June, here at The Magic of Joe Ferranti, it has been non-stop magic performances. The excitement and anticipation of a return to "normalcy" has kept us very busy. No complaints, better busy than idle.
The Holiday season is rapidly approaching, and a dark cloud is looming in the distance. The big question is will we see the return of the Holiday party. Last year there were no company holiday parties, no friends and family celebrations.
The answer won't come until we know the extent of the Virus Variant, "Delta". It seems certain we will not shut down, but without confidence of a safe environment, we may put non-essential events on hold.
And so it goes, we may be perpetually behind the "eight ball, "unable to put this terrible virus in our rear vision mirror.
One year ago, I posted a blog... The Year Without Christmas ...Parties. The date was Nov. 18, 2020. If I'm not performing at parties this November, I will repost the blog for 2021. I hope I won't be doing that.

June 6th, 2021...graduation and celebration for the Senior Class of Newburyport High School.
In May, I performed for the Billerica Memorial High School Graduating Class. Although, I was fully vaccinated, the students were not. Following safety protocols, I performed with a mask as well as the graduating class. It was a great evening, enjoyed by all. We made the best of what we had, still not out of the pandemic.
Jump forward to June 6th, the entire graduating class on Newburyport High School has been vaccinated and we picked up where we left off pre-pandemic. No holds barred, Close Up Magic performed as it is meant to be performed, "Close Up and Personal." The kids, 17 and 18 years old loved it. I mean kids compared to me, the young men and women are heading off to college at the end of the summer, and they'll be attending classes in person. The graduates caught a "break" after the seemingly endless life with restrictions.
Of course, we will all go through many challenges as the return to "normal" is not going to happen overnight.
Good Luck to you all, it was a pleasure to meet and spend a few minutes entertaining you with magic.
After, who knows how long... I have returned to work, and I've never been busier. Many past clients have been in touch for "Magic entertainment" and new clients are reaching out, and I am happy to respond and help in any way I can.

Everybody has a story of their experience navigating life through the pandemic, mine is typical of the lucky ones, so I'll leave it at that.
Magic for Adults Massachusetts and New Hampshire
I know those whose experiences were traumatic and some ongoing illness.
As I am thankful for my reentering the working class, I have not closed my eyes to the rest of the world. As always, so many suffer as I have the privilege to celebrate.
"Don't spike the ball on the five yard line." I don't suppose I need to tell you who to attribute that quote to? I believe it's good advice.
Honestly, if your not a little anxious during these times; you ain't got blood running through your veins. This past year we have seen over a half million deaths to a virus. A crash of the economy, food lines, business closings...you get the picture. Anxiety? We no longer need fluoride in our water supply, but a good dose of Prozac might be a good idea.
On the personal side, I had two live Magic shows in Boston in the past two weeks. As a courtesy, I used the recommended precautions to ensure my audience's comfort. A year ago, this would not have occurred.
This is by no means, normalcy...but we don't expect "normal" by a flip of the switch.
I would love to work with anyone, and will accommodate your needs with your local guidelines.
I'm ready for your wedding, graduation and more. Hopefully we will have a "total celebration" on December 31st.

So, here we are...February first. 2021. The pandemic is still a menace to the globe. I like many other entertainers am "running in the red." It's been a year without income, it will be the first time in years that I will not be sending a large check to the IRS in April. my expenses, even with serious cuts far out weigh the miniscule income. But don't feel bad for me, my retirement income, along with my wife's keeps a roof over our head with enough left for food.
Currently, two vaccines have been approved, with at least a couple more approaching on the horizon. I can hardly contain myself, but I must wait for my "turn". You can see in the picture, I am using two masks. No one is really sure if this is beneficial. I come form the "more is better" school of thinking.
Last week I received a request for an adult Birthday performance. My response was to the point and succinct. "I perform with a mask and follow all guidelines of the State of Massachusetts." the client assured me they take this virus seriously, and the number of guests would be below the limit. so we proceeded forward.
On January 31'st we were in the cross hairs of a Nor' Easter, a major stumbling block for driving. This party was in jeopardy. The client contacted me and asked if it would be better to start early...I said, "yes, yes, yes!"
Honestly, the driving was not good...I took the back roads and drove very slowly. I made it there with only two minor skids.
what a pleasure to perform, it's been so long. I don't think the rust showed. We all had a good time, and I headed home. This time only one minor skid. I got in the door to the delight of my wife and dog.
I got changed out of my suit and relaxed in front of the TV. About an hour after I got home, the phone rings...guess who? It was Mike, the client. He was checking in to make sure I made it home safe. Wow, what a good human being. They are still out their. thanks Mike, you made my day. (Thank you for your more than generous tip as well.) I believe we will meet again.
Sincerely,
Joe Ferranti
