Listening to Lay People...A Magician's perspective.

Listening to lay people...one at a time.

I was out for a couple drinks with Lisa, at our local bar...the one where everybody knows your name.

Steve, the bartender has seen me perform a couple tricks. (something I rarely do when out for pleasure) So, Steve asks me if I know a Chinese magician who was on P&T FU...incredibly good he tells me. “Must be Shin Lim”...”Yes!” he tells me how incredible he is, I totally agree, “That kid operates on a  totally different level…” Of course Steve asks if I know how he does it.

“I haven’t got a clue, like I said he’s something special.”

Steve tells me about another magician he saw on AGT who did a trick with coins and rose petals. “Oh yeah, that’s Will Tsai.”

Steve tells me he didn’t particularly care for the trick...this is the trick that blew away the judges, one of them responded that this was "real magic"...something like that.

I think most lay people would agree with the judges, but Steve sensed there was something more to Will’s presentation...something that assisted him with this “miracle.” I nodded my head...but didn’t get into it as I make every effort to not say anything negative about other magicians.

Our discussion got me to thinking about the judges on AGT. If you watch the show, you know there are many magicians who perform close up magic. Each and every one perform at the judges table. Not on the stage. Hmmm, this never crossed their minds, and it obviously didn’t impact their reaction. I do wonder why they didn’t question the distance issue.

Which is why I listen to lay people…one at a time.

BTW...I am aware that Eric Jones made his last performance on the stage, however all the judges were on stage with him, still qualifies for real close up.

Adult Birthday Magic...Wellesley Hills, Ma.

Adults love Magic at their birthday celebrations...every now and then they are concerned the Magic may be "Cheesy." Of course not, here's a recent review of a performance.

"If your looking for the perfect way to take your party to the next level, look no further. Joe was awesome. He was professional, funny and most importantly an amazing magician. Joe started off with special trick for the man of honor. He then worked the room amazing each guest as he went table to table. Joe communicated with me before the event to make sure everything went smoothly, he showed up on time, dressed professionally, and made sure to thank me before leaving. Great tricks, great jokes great guy. Thank you Joe! You made my friends 40th B'day party one to remember! -Jeff S, Nashua, NH

Birthday Magic...adult entertainment.

                                      Magic at www.towneboston.com/

Always happy to perform in Boston...even though parking is crazy and expensive.

I've never performed at an adult birthday party I haven't enjoyed, but some stand out, and for some reason are special.
This was most certainly the case last Friday, December 1st.
Two years previous I performed at a Wedding cocktail hour for a very special couple, and when it was time for the best friend of the groom to celebrate a special birthday of his own, it was my pleasure to be contacted and to provide some fun Magical entertainment.
As all entertainers know, you give a little bit of yourself as you perform, but what the audience doesn't know is they pay it back, many times more than what we give.
I remain humble, as I take more than I give.

Getting the Reaction you want...Magicians Only

Of course we all like enthusiastic reactions, clapping; an occasional scream, and personally I never get tired of “WTF”. Frankly, if people aren’t having a good time...well, you’re in the wrong business.

My thoughts here are when we can go for a specific reaction, or how I have arrived at the precise reaction I am aiming for in my Birthday Card routine. Now, just because I have reached my goal, doesn’t mean I am getting the “best” reaction. Only that I am getting my desired reaction.

Recently, I blogged on the card to wallet. Anyone who performs this, knows you will always get good/great reactions.(What’s not to like?)

Quite often the spectators will anticipate that “their card” is going to be in the wallet. This can play well as usually the reaction is the “no way” anticipation reaction. You succeed in doing what they expected, but still they know it is impossible.

In the “Birthday” routine the card I remove has a happy birthday message on the back of their signed card. I use blank backs and have colorful happy Birthday balloons and personalize the card with their name printed on the card. (A nice giveaway.)

My goal was to have the spectator hold their card...not realize it is a playing card...and of course not to have a clue their signature is on the other side...and further having to coax them to turn the card over.

These are the additions I have added over the years to help achieve this reaction.

Since this is my first “trick” for the Birthday recipient, I might as well have the card be in a sealed envelope. Also, why not staple the envelope on all sides, as it requires no additional effort.(BTW, I have performed staple and non-stapled numerous times...stapled makes a difference!

The final thing I have added is during my introduction to the Birthday person, I tell them I have a birthday card for them…”we’ll get back to that.”

I repeat, I am not sure if this is the best reaction, but I get it by design. Thank you Darwin.

Oh, you can see a clip...

Magic entertainment Boston MA

Magic for everyone...

www.ferrantimagic.com  339-927-4710

As I choose to entertain at adult functions...just what I like to do.
However, it does not mean I am not prepared for everyone.
This is actually a coin "trick" for adults...seems to work for everyone.

The presentation of "Magic" for adults is often beyond the understanding of children. This particular
piece plays well for all ages. The magic is easy to follow, pure "Eye Candy."

In my blog of 10-16 I was observing that people were reacting to magic with the word, “What!”

In fact, I have a promo video of a wedding where “what!” is repeated several times. See video below

As I said, I have no idea how these snowballs start rolling, but they do.

Recently in 2017, I have begun to hear spectators say “Boom”! See video below at 12 seconds

Of course, I am pleased at any positive reaction...kinda what this stuff is about.

My observations are simply a glimpse of active sociology,[social order, disorder, and change.] leading to nowhere.

I’ll never know how far my observations are ahead or behind a “trend”...I’ll be back when I hear something that is new to me.
