Getting the Reaction you want...Magicians Only

Of course we all like enthusiastic reactions, clapping; an occasional scream, and personally I never get tired of “WTF”. Frankly, if people aren’t having a good time...well, you’re in the wrong business.

My thoughts here are when we can go for a specific reaction, or how I have arrived at the precise reaction I am aiming for in my Birthday Card routine. Now, just because I have reached my goal, doesn’t mean I am getting the “best” reaction. Only that I am getting my desired reaction.

Recently, I blogged on the card to wallet. Anyone who performs this, knows you will always get good/great reactions.(What’s not to like?)

Quite often the spectators will anticipate that “their card” is going to be in the wallet. This can play well as usually the reaction is the “no way” anticipation reaction. You succeed in doing what they expected, but still they know it is impossible.

In the “Birthday” routine the card I remove has a happy birthday message on the back of their signed card. I use blank backs and have colorful happy Birthday balloons and personalize the card with their name printed on the card. (A nice giveaway.)

My goal was to have the spectator hold their card...not realize it is a playing card...and of course not to have a clue their signature is on the other side...and further having to coax them to turn the card over.

These are the additions I have added over the years to help achieve this reaction.

Since this is my first “trick” for the Birthday recipient, I might as well have the card be in a sealed envelope. Also, why not staple the envelope on all sides, as it requires no additional effort.(BTW, I have performed staple and non-stapled numerous times...stapled makes a difference!

The final thing I have added is during my introduction to the Birthday person, I tell them I have a birthday card for them…”we’ll get back to that.”

I repeat, I am not sure if this is the best reaction, but I get it by design. Thank you Darwin.

Oh, you can see a clip...

Magic entertainment Boston MA

Magic for everyone...

www.ferrantimagic.com  339-927-4710

As I choose to entertain at adult functions...just what I like to do.
However, it does not mean I am not prepared for everyone.
This is actually a coin "trick" for adults...seems to work for everyone.

The presentation of "Magic" for adults is often beyond the understanding of children. This particular
piece plays well for all ages. The magic is easy to follow, pure "Eye Candy."

In my blog of 10-16 I was observing that people were reacting to magic with the word, “What!”

In fact, I have a promo video of a wedding where “what!” is repeated several times. See video below

As I said, I have no idea how these snowballs start rolling, but they do.

Recently in 2017, I have begun to hear spectators say “Boom”! See video below at 12 seconds

Of course, I am pleased at any positive reaction...kinda what this stuff is about.

My observations are simply a glimpse of active sociology,[social order, disorder, and change.] leading to nowhere.

I’ll never know how far my observations are ahead or behind a “trend”...I’ll be back when I hear something that is new to me.

Adult Birthday Party Magic

Walk Around | Strolling Magician Boston Mass.

Boston Walk Around Magician, Joe Ferranti performs for all adult Birthday parties.
Of course you will see laughter and strong reactions. Mostly from younger adults.
However, Birthday Magic is not exclusive to the young. Many seniors enjoy a good laugh and some magical entertainment...perhaps a little more subdued reactions.
So, here we are, with a slightly older crowd...you'll not see "David Blaine" reactions, but I assure you a good time was had by all, including the Magician.

Don’t Try This at Home…or Worse, Don’t Try this With Paying Clients!

Joe Ferranti      Cocktail Magician Boston Mass.

Think of the Jazz musician…now think of the Jazz Magician, hmmm? That’s what I’d like to do! …maybe not?

I have many magic friends in social media. They kindly share their experiences in the performance arena. Just recently a more than capable performer (Top Professional) told how he had improvised a performance with a borrowed deck of cards. He was not bragging, just telling what resulted in a non-prepped performance. Another well respected pro commented that this is the only way he performs. Unfortunately, these real experiences are usually misinterpreted by the less experienced, and the result can be disastrous.
Just because someone else can do it, does not mean that You should attempt this. Do you really believe that you can borrow a pack of cards, go out unprepared and deliver a performance that a client will pay for, and be happy that they did? Why would you take such a chance?

Why does this bother me? Because I’ve seen the results of “Magicians” who fancy themselves capable of “Jazzing”, when they are clearly not. I wish those capable of Jazzing would give a warning, “this performance is by a trained professional, this is very dangerous…do not attempt this in your performances.”

My caution will fall upon deaf ears. The cocky magician does not want to put in the work; he just goes out and “astounds the masses”. (Yeah…right!) Not the ones I’ve seen! They stumble on their words; they have no idea when the time is right to do the “Move/Sleight”.

Our routines/tricks need structure. It’s your choice if you remember each and every word, despite what the Lazy ones say, this can sound fresh and new during each and every performance. It damn well sounds better than not having a clue. At the very least, have a basic frame work.

As I said, I have heard the success of Magicians I respect, who can succeed in this type of performance, but here’s what you should know before you go out on the High Wire.

These pros have spent uncountable hours in practice, uncountable hours in performance situations; they have encountered things you cannot even imagine.

I’m sure some will accuse me of being a robotic performer, no not at all. I do consider myself well-rehearsed and even so there are times we I have to go off script, it’s just a reality of Strolling Magic. Sometimes when performing a “Think of a Card” trick, a suitable ending may vary…S*it happens. So...maybe Mercury Fold??? Card under watch???…card in Altoid tin???… (Jonathan Kamm)

The lay person still reacts...“Damn, I only thought of that card!”

Truth be told, the card under watch, etc. are also well rehearsed, just not part of the original plan.

If you want to "Jazz it" put in the hours...and take a good hard look inside, even then most of us should not attempt this for our paying customers.
